You can help by requesting that your health insurance company include New Life Birth Center either in-network or out-of-network. The more people request midwifery and birth center options, the more likely that employers, human resource departments, and health insurance companies will provide this option.  Check with your benefits specialist to see if midwifery and birth centers are included.

Had difficulty getting midwifery services?  Want access to a freestanding birth center and can't get it? Write to Governor McDonnell, your state Senator and your Delegate. Let them know your story. The main barrier we see is the requirement for a written agreement with a physician for collaboration and prescriptive privileges. This requirement prevents many licensed, certified nurse-midwives from working in Virginia.

Also consider contacting your local physicians, hospital director, hospital board of directors, and the Virginia Medical Society to let them know you want their support for midwifery services in homes, birth centers, and hospitals.  Let them know Virginia women want midwifery and birth centers as a health care choice.
