A birth center is:

A homelike facility that provides family-centered care for healthy women before, during and after normal pregnancy, labor and birth.

Guided by principles of prevention, safety, appropriate medical intervention, and cost-effectiveness.

Based on the philosophy that pregnancy is a normal, healthy process, rather than an illness.

A safe environment for families to experience the social, emotional and spiritual renewal inherent in bringing forth new life.

A place where parents are encouraged to be informed and to assume responsibility for their own health and the health of their family.

What do we expect:
  • Improved pregnancy outcomes
  • Improved parenting
  • Improved lifestyle and health choices
  • Stronger family relationships
  • Stronger social networks with local churches
  • Better citizens and a stronger community

About Nurse-Midwives

Certified Nurse Midwifes (CNM):

Are registered nurses with graduate studies in midwifery care who have passed a national certification examination and are licensed by the state.  CNMs focus on preventive and holistic care for mothers-to-be and support for the whole family.

Believe women labor best where they feel safe, have privacy, are free to make choices and have birth attendants they trust.

Consult or refer to other health care specialists if needed.

Invest the time to deal with emotional and spiritual issues that affect pregnancy outcomes, family relationships and parenting.

Group prenatal care:

Creates a support network for women and families through volunteers and local churches.

Uses the group process to motivate and empower women to make healthy lifestyle changes.

Has been shown to increase the birth weight and length of pregnancy for infants born prematurely.

Women's Health and Birth Care, Houston, Texas

Birth centers are designed specifically for healthy pregnant women and their families who desire midwifery care. They provide safe, sensitive care.  Pregnancy and birth are seen as normal phases of life, not medical conditions.  Birth centers support the midwifery philosophy of birth by creating a comfortable, relaxed, home-like atmosphere. Prenatal care, labor support, birth, postpartum care, and gynecologic care are provided at the center.

The home-like environment includes a kitchen and living area, private bedrooms with large tubs for labor or birth, offices, and exam rooms.  Women are free to eat and drink as they choose.  Anyone they desire can attend the prenatal visits, labor, and birth.   Emergency equipment is available, though very rarely needed.  Infrequently an emergency does arise and women are transported to a nearby hospital.

Virginia has no regulations governing birth centers at this time.  Many birth centers are members of the American Association of Childbirth Centers (AABC).  National standards have been defined and accreditation is provided by the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers.
