Local statistics:

In 2005, the local Roanoke Perinatal Mortality Review Team made over 40 recommendations for improvement in prenatal care in the Roanoke Valley.  Supported through grants from the Virginia Dept of Health and Carilion Health System, this team is made up of representatives from the local health departments, hospitals, clinics, CHIP, Project Link, New Life Birth Center, and other organizations in the Roanoke Valley.

There were 6591 pregnancies reported in 2005 in Roanoke and the surrounding counties.  Of these 5038 were live births, 1159 were induced abortions, and 394 were miscarriage or

stillborn.

There were approximately 1,978 cesarean sections.

There were approximately 380 infants born weighing less than 5 1/2 pounds.

Our calculations show that if New Life Birth Center serves 350 women/year in the Roanoke Valley, the local community would save over $1,500,000 every year in health care costs.  We would prevent 87 cesarean sections and 7 low birth weight babies.

(Based on figures provided by the March of Dimes, Virginia Dept. of Health, the Thomason Healthcare Report, and the American Association of Birth Centers.)
