Does your health care coverage include the birth center option?

NOW IS THE TIME TO HELP FAMILIES HAVE THE OPTION

OF BIRTH CENTER CARE. 

Contact the person buying health insurance for you or your employer  (usually in Human Resources department)  Ask that midwives and birth centers be included in their coverage.  Employers can negotiate with insurance companies.  Birth centers and midwifery care reduce the cost of maternity care for insurance companies and businesses.

The more who request this coverage the more likely insurance providers will offer women the option of out-of-hospital birth in a freestanding birth center.

Had difficulty getting midwifery services?  Want access to a freestanding birth center and can't get it?

Write to Governor McDonnell, your state Senator and your Delegate. Let them know your story. The main barrier we see is the requirement for a written agreement with a physician for collaboration and prescriptive privileges or a "medical team led by a physician". This requirement prevents many licensed, certified nurse-midwives from working in Virginia. Write your state and federal representatives and ask them to FREE the Midwives and FREE the health care market.

Also consider contacting your local physicians, hospital director, hospital board of directors, and the Virginia Medical Society to let them know you want their support for midwifery services in homes, birth centers, and hospitals.  Let them know Virginia women want midwifery and birth centers as a health care choice.
